CROWNS

2 APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED

Dental crowns, are permanent prosthetics cemented onto teeth or implants. They strengthen damaged teeth, improve appearance and bite, and prevent shifting. Crowns cover most of a tooth’s exposed part and resist decay, though decay can still occur at the gum line.

Process:

First, the dentist checks and shapes the tooth; if needed, they restore the base. An impression is sent to a lab for the permanent crown, and a temporary crown is fitted. At your next visit, the permanent crown is cemented in place.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns:

These crowns have a metal base with porcelain fused over it, delivering durability with a natural look. PFM crowns from Amazing Dental Care contain nickel, so inform your dentist of any allergies.

Advantages Disadvantages

PFMs ensure a precise fit and are durable even if the porcelain layer chips.

The metal substructure keeps the tooth protected.

Aesthetic limitations make PFMs less suitable for highly visible teeth; zirconia may be preferred for appearance.

More tooth must be trimmed compared to zirconia options.

Potential for metal allergy and corrosion.

Adjustment

Mild discomfort or sensitivity after placement is normal and should fade within weeks.

Home Care Tips:

  • Brush regularly, focusing on the gum line—electric toothbrushes are best.
  • Use antibacterial mouthwash with a Waterpik™ as needed.
  • Avoid hard and sticky foods for 24 hours after cementing and limit sugary snacks long term.
  • Minimize exposure to staining substances and tobacco.
  • Temporary sensitivity to temperature is common.

Contact Us If:

  • You notice the crown hits first when biting.
  • You feel loosening, breakage, or sensitivity.
  • Your crown develops a bad taste.
  • You require a root canal after crowning.
  • Your temporary or permanent crown becomes loose—use dental adhesive and call us immediately.

Zirconium Crown (Zr)

Zirconia (zirconium oxide) is a white powdered metal commonly used for dental frameworks such as crowns, bridges, and other dental substructures. It provides a whiter, more translucent appearance to teeth and is transparent on x-rays. Zirconia has been utilised in cosmetic dentistry for several years to achieve aesthetic results, and it has more recently become a widely accepted dental material. Zirconia crowns are suitable for molars due to their strength and also maintain the desired appearance for front teeth.

Aspect Description
Translucency Zirconia crowns can be sufficiently translucent to blend with natural teeth, offering a realistic look.
Gum Margin Appearance When bonded rather than cemented with conventional dental cement, these crowns do not display a visible line at the gum margin.
Damage Resistance Porcelain crowns may chip, while zirconia crowns demonstrate increased resistance to damage.
Material Durability Zirconia crowns are fabricated from durable materials intended for long-term use.
Strength & Tooth Preservation They provide significant strength with reduced volume compared to some other crown materials, which may allow preservation of additional healthy tooth structure in limited spaces.
Biocompatibility Zirconia is considered biocompatible, making it unlikely to cause allergic or adverse reactions.
Corrosion Resistance The material is resistant to corrosion, contributing to its overall durability.
Friction Zirconia crowns can create friction with adjacent teeth and the tooth root due to their hardness.
Decay Risk Decay beneath a crown can loosen or dislodge it, so maintaining good oral hygiene remains important.

Adjustment Period

It is typical for a newly cemented crown to feel different for several days as adjacent teeth adjust to altered biting forces.

Preventive Procedures

To extend the longevity of restorations and decrease the risk of future decay or tissue issues, consider these home care guidelines:

  • Brush after eating and before bedtime with a soft or electric toothbrush, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum line.
  • Use a prescribed antibacterial, alcohol-free mouthwash with a Waterpik™ to support gum health.
  • Refrain from chewing hard foods or objects on new restorations for 24 hours to allow the cement to set properly.
  • Limit consumption of sticky candies and sugary snacks; brush and rinse after eating them.
  • Avoid tobacco, coffee, tea, blueberries, and other items that can stain teeth.
  • Maintain oral hygiene to prevent infection resulting from plaque accumulation.
  • Some mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods may occur and generally resolves within a few weeks.

Problems

Contact Amazing Dental Care if any of the following situations arise:

  • The tooth is the first to contact during biting after several days—an adjustment may be required.
  • Movement or looseness in the restoration.
  • Increased sensitivity to sweets or the development of an unusual taste.
  • Breakage of part of the restoration or pressure sensitivity.
  • A crowned tooth requires a root canal after restoration.
  • If a temporary crown detaches, use dental adhesive until your appointment.
  • If the permanent crown comes off, apply dental adhesive and schedule an appointment for reseating.
